Put the glasses hunt on hold, it’s time for a quiz show!
The first episode of 2018 doesn’t have to be a light affair that takes a detour from the ongoing storyline, but it’s a good idea. Everyone’s still recovering after the holidays, and before shows that started in April of last year begin sliding towards their finales, it’s good to take some time to just enjoy the cast being themselves. And PriPara does that to maximum effect in the show’s first return to Parajuku in some time.
It begins with Lala inviting her new friends over to meet her family, with everyone being surprised at how small Non is in real life compared to her idol self. Though they’re even more surprised when it’s revealed how big Non’s gotten in other ways. Parajuku has rebuilt itself after the Great Mechanee Incident of 2017, and is celebrating with a quiz show hosted by the most popular idol there – Non! With her older sister off at another city-state of idols, getting involved in their politics and their mystical backstories, Non Sugar has risen to be the number one idol group in the area.
During the events of the quiz show, there are two elements that make great use of character storylines. The first is the members of Galumageddon sneaking in wearing body-concealing robes. Like Sophie’s jellyfish gear, but still blatantly themed to themselves. I think Meganee let them get past security mostly just to screw with them when the time came.
The other is acknowledging just how similar Michiru and Chiri are. The moment the two of them step inside, they’re instantly fighting about character overlap, and it only worsens when they’re put on the same team for the quiz show. By the end, their outside selves do become friends, but not before they consistently try to one-up each other.
Episodes like this are enjoyable. And it’s made better by i☆Ris returning to perform the new OP, and World Star’s new ED is good too. Animation-wise, they’re both a bit more robust than what we had before. And musically, too. Even if they only last for one cour, this is the kind of music I won’t mind listening to week after week.
Shuuka and Galala. Now that Shuuka’s aware she’s being duped, how will she deal with it? And Galala’s going to perform?
