Welcome to an ending, a beginning and a series of mistakes.
I was thinking this episode wouldn’t give me too much to talk about. That’s the thing with idol shows. They make their money off their music, and something like the second Aikatsu movie or the currently only PriPara movie is more about seeing these songs on the big screen rather than seeing them differently, per se. It’s something that’s lost when they get released on video. The same goes for major talent/competition episodes. Those often fill up their runtime with songs and very little behind the scenes action. So when that action does come up, it’s a matter of making it count.
No new songs or even any special musical gimmicks this episode, but we do get the first piece of the Divine Outfit revealed, and it’s that shiny hat you see above. Both Solami Smile and Dressing Pafe won it. Triangle was the only “group” not to claim a prize, but it makes sense for the same reasons I’ve been going into these past few episodes. They’ve gotten close to Jululu, and she’s always going to show respect to her surrogate parents.
Then everything goes downhill when Pinon starts giving a victory speech despite having lost, and she and Junon start rolling around the stage like characters in a visual novel. I was wondering when the other shoe would drop, and it did = rather quickly. Non is mortified that her sister found out, and while Lala is excited about the new possibilities it may bring, like a duet with her sister, Non wants nothing to do with it. The younger sister being the more responsible one is something that anime has done for a long time, but the extra dimensions being added to Non this season are kind of fascinating. She’s got so much already, but the desire to have one thing more can drive a person to do things beyond their capabilities. Like making holograms that can dance with you. We all express it in different ways.
I appreciated the cameo of the European team, all of whom got speaking roles, and the intentionally limited animation of the final scene, with Non trying to give her sister the cold shoulder, was a funny way to end the episode.
Non revealed her default PriPara self just after the competition, a character design that looks more like Lala’s, but with light blue instead of yellow. She said she was going to look for teammates who aren’t holograms so she can have a real trio. I’m curious how this is going to play out, and what it means for the original Triangle. They may make cameos later on, or perhaps Non’s song will go to her new unit. What kind of teammates will she have? The show’s got a pretty packed cast already, and I’m curious what sort of archetypes the show has yet to work with.
The hat and the Divine Idol Grand Prix may have been the bulk of the screentime this week, but Non’s reveal is going to have way more lasting repercussions on stories to come.
Freaky-looking Meganee robots! I didn’t catch anything else.
